Double coats consist of a warm, soft and thick undercoat and longer and more harsh top coat desgined so that water easily runs off. Brush your dog at least two or three times a week to prevent mats and tangles. Use a slicker brush on your dog’s rump where the fur is thicker and longer.

For double coated breeds we use FURminator premium shampoo and conditioner, enriched with Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids, Calendula Extract and Papaya Leaf Extract, it promotes healthy skin and coat while reducing shedding. The coat is then blasted from the root before de-shedding with one of our furminator tools and/or grooming rake to remove loose and dead hairs from your dog’s undercoat.

Some breeds may then benefit from trimming some areas where the underecoat has grown long such as their chest, tuck, legs/paws, tail and rump.

Most double coated dogs will shed twice a year. Clipping your dog will NOT help with shedding. Their coat helps to keep them cool during warm weather. Clipping your dog allows their skin to be directly exposed to the sun, and this will increase the likelihood of sunburn and heatstroke. The undercoat usually grows faster than the topcoat and therefore, once clipped it is very unlikely that the topcoat will ever catch up and create a distance between the two coats again.
